Glock 21 Gen 4 Review - Of all the .45 Auto semi-automatic pistol options, the Glock certainly has a respectable position. Glock is known for its reliable and simple design - important factors for many shooters. The Glock was able to mediate between those who wanted larger caliber ammunition in their pistol and those who were tired of only carrying 6 or 7 rounds in the magazine. This brings us to the firearm we are looking at for this review, the Glock 21.

Glock introduced the G21 SF (Short Frame) in 2007 to compete for the DOD contract. The deal didn't close, but the firearm gained popularity among law enforcement and civilians due to its unique features. Based on the 3rd generation Glock 21, the company made only a few changes for this variant. For this Glock 21 review, we ran the Glock 21 SF.

Glock 21 Gen 4 Review

The most significant of the changes seen in the Glock 21 SF is (as the name suggests) a smaller frame circumference. Not to be confused with frame width, the shorter frame provides a shallower frame depth than the Gen 3 version of the Glock 21. This shallower frame depth allows those with smaller hands to get a proper grip and access to features. In the newer generations (Gen 4), the grip length of the Glock 21 is about the same as the G21 SF.

Rebuilding For Horsepower

As mentioned earlier, the Glock 21 SF is chambered in one of the "big boy" calibers - .45 ACP. Most shooters recognize the 45 ACP as a classic caliber, and many self-defense shooters still depend on the cartridge today.

Glock combines tradition with capacity in the Glock 21 SF. The Glock 21 SF offers a 13+1 capacity – a number that seems reasonable given the frame size.

Another unique aspect of the Glock 21 SF is the inclusion of an ambidextrous magazine release. While this feature is nice, I found it lacking in functionality. I will touch on this in more detail in the review. A few Glock 21 SF frames were made with a Picatinny-style rail for mounting accessories – few still exist, and holster compatibility is an issue.

Most Glock 21 SF variants available today are from police departments that have retired them. These stores can be found in some places for as little as $350-$400 - a great deal for sure.

When I first got my hands on the G21, I quickly felt at home with it. I know not everyone likes or even enjoys the Glock "experience", but as someone who has owned and operated Glocks, I felt comfortable. Some might even argue that the Glock is an "acquired" taste - whether you like the ergonomics of the Glock or not, the 21 SF will feel right.

Although it is made for use by people with different hand sizes, the frame is still quite stylish. I shoot the Glock 17 quite often and this frame provides a better fit than the 17. While I didn't mind the feel or size of the frame, I did have some issues with the magazine release. I'll touch on that later when I touch on the functional side of things.

My expectations of how this gun would handle recoil and running in general were wrong. Based on the caliber, I expected a bit more difficulty with these later shots. However, I was pleasantly surprised. In my experience, this gun performed very well. The gun fired every type of ammo I fed it without a problem. I was really impressed with the recoil management.

While the frame is comfortable, I wish it had more textured surfaces. Especially after shooting or sweating for a while, the G21 SF became slippery. The 21 SF felt slider had no front serrations and seemed to struggle to hold consistently. Some frame plugs and slide work would be a nice aftermarket addition.

Shooting the G21 SF put a lot of confidence in my hand – and that confidence grew when I realized that fast and accurate follow-ups were very possible. I did a few drills using a zone C steel plate from about 15 yards while moving forward and sideways. The consistent shots and handling I experienced with the Glock 21 made this pistol a joy to shoot.

Glocks aren't exactly known for fantastic factory sights or triggers. Their work is usually nothing spectacular. My experience with the G21 SF was on par with every other Glock I've shot for that matter.

A white "U" shaped rear sight with a stock front post is found here on the G21 SF. I was able to get these sights well enough to feel pretty confident, but then again, I've used these sights before. If you buy one of these G21 SFs (usually a police job), be prepared to swap out the sights for low light use. I know it depends on preference, but the fiber optic front with dimming options for sale works well for me.

My trigger testing of the G21 SF showed an average weight of 5.5 pounds using the Lyman trigger scale — which is pretty typical for a Glock trigger. I know many are really against these triggers. I've shot enough Glock pistols at this point not to worry too much about them.

This trigger in particular felt smoother than a regular Glock trigger. Maybe it's because of his age and "introduction" years. Regardless, I appreciated the smooth reception and sharp termination. No serious complaints from me.

For the most part, the weapons are plain and simple. it's a glock. I noted a few things about the functionality that were still quite uncomfortable - the double-sided magazine issue being the first. I feel like Glock compromised functionality here to fit DOD contract requirements.

The design of the magazine release allowed for a smaller footprint than your typical Glock magazine release. I actually had to break the grip and rotate the frame to get into this release. My hands are average size. I was a little shocked that I struggled so much to get the right angle for the magazine changes.

The slide release also gave me a little goosebumps. While the design looked identical to Glock's regular slide release, it didn't function like one. It took unusual and precise pressure to release the slide. During most of the recording, I broke the slide by hand.

This may not be a problem (and I know there are options to post-release the slides), but I thought it was worth mentioning.

As part of my range testing with the Glock 21 SF, I used a Labrador Doppler radar to obtain ballistic data. 230 Gr using Speer Gold Dot. ammo, I shot 5 as the labrador ran away.

The average muzzle velocity from this test was 832 feet per second from the G21 SF. Speer advertises a muzzle velocity of 890 feet per second. Here's a closer look at the ammunition performance I observed in the Glock 21.

The Glock 21 SF is clearly a proven and tested firearm that has seen many years of service. With Glock ready and aftermarket support, it's hard to go wrong with a firearm like this. Considering the price and the potential to find a lot of used options in good condition, the value seems high.

My experience with the G21SF exceeded my expectations in terms of performance and I honestly want one now. It's not a perfect gun, but in my opinion it has strong potential to be put together with a few simple aftermarket modifications. If you're looking for a well-built, reliable .45 Auto, the Glock 21 SF might be for you. These include the Glock Model 20 10mm and the Glock Model 21 .45 ACP pistol. Introduced in 1990, the Model 21 in .45 ACP competes with other large-caliber handguns in the police service. Americans demand more shots in their defensive pistols, and in that regard, my opinion is America Four Squared.

The gun was well received. Good reliability and accuracy are good selling points. Another strong point is that the magazine holds 13 rounds of .45 ACP, giving the gun a total capacity of 14 rounds.

The downside of the gun is its size. Female shooters with small hands and long fingers often do well with the Glock 21, although practice and familiarity with the type are essential. Due to the polymer frame, the gun is quite light, even though it is large.

Looking at the whole picture, the Glock offers considerable firepower in a lightweight package. For example, an original Colt 1911 Government model in the same caliber weighs 39 ounces. The current service pistol, the 9mm Beretta 92, weighs 35 ounces and offers 15 rounds of the less effective 9mm cartridge.
