Taxes can be difficult even with top-notch tax preparation software, so the more options you have to complete them, the better. H&R Block offers more personal tax preparation options than its competitors, including in-office services, do-it-yourself software, online applications, and many options for virtual expert assistance. We took a look at the self-employed version of H&R Block, which offers a highly effective blend of tax coverage, usability and guidance for taxpayers. It is one of the best tax preparation services.
Multiple improvements make this year's software better than ever. Reporting cryptocurrency transactions is now easier, for example, and support options have improved. H&R Block also supports integration with Wave, a free small business accounting service purchased by the company that we recommend. This is an early look at H&R Block; We will test and evaluate it when its features are finalized and IRS filing begins.
Since 1982, we've tested and evaluated thousands of products to help you make better purchasing decisions. Read our editorial mission (opens in new window) and see how we test (opens in new window).

H&R Block's core lineup includes four services. Free Online (free), Deluxe Online ($55 federal filing, $37 state), Premium Online ($75 federal, $37 state), and Self-Employed Online ($110 federal, $37). Generally, you can expect discounts on these prices at the start of tax season.
The free tier is free for both federal and state filings. It supports terms such as Form 1040 and W-2 income, student expenses, and retirement income, as well as the Earned Income Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC).

Tax Filing Assistance From A Real Tax Professional
Deluxe Online adds many features, including item selection, Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), no-fee self-employment income, and the ability to manage and store your tax returns for up to six years. You also get technical support via phone or chat in this range of services. Adds Premium Online Schedules D, E, and F. Self-Employed Adds Online Schedule C, which provides the ability to claim self-employment and small business income and expenses and property depreciation.
Many additional services give you access to expert assistance from tax professionals (CPAs, EAs and H&R block agents). TaxPro Review ($175 self-employed kit), for example, is what it sounds like. You complete your returns and reviews, codes and e-files from H&R Black Tax Professional for you. Online Assist ($145 if combined with self-employment) provides unlimited on-demand assistance via chat, call and screen sharing on any device. TurboTax offers similar services, albeit at higher prices.
How do H&R block prices compare? They are lower than TurboTax across the board. But there are also cheaper options.
The Cash Taxes (formerly Credit Karma Tax) app offers completely free federal and state filing, and FreeTaxUSA is free for federal filing and $14.99 per state. Note, however, that with free services, you sacrifice a bit when it comes to hand-holding, which most of us need at some point in the process.
H&r Block Review
TaxSlayer's $19.95 Classic plan ($39.95 per state) supports Schedule C, so it's one of the cheapest options for self-employed individuals.
All H&R Block websites offer multiple layers of protection, including industry-standard web browsing encryption technology and multi-factor authentication. Your personal data is protected and monitored 24/7. The company hires outside security experts to conduct audits and assess risks, and its data centers, network and servers are housed in secure facilities.
If you've ever sat in a tax preparer's office, you've probably noticed what questions to ask and in what order. Online personal tax preparation services work similarly, minimizing human interaction. You won't see graphical displays of tax forms while you work. Instead, the wizard will guide you through a long series of questions and answers. While you answer, the website works in the background to make the necessary calculations and fill out the official IRS forms and schedules.
As you progress through the wizard, you can track your progress through occasional summaries of your work so far and real-time dollar figures that show what you owe or will be paid at that point in the process. Help is available in a variety of ways. If you do not understand a certain question, you can click on the links for more detailed explanations. The best services never subject you to the sometimes complicated language the IRS uses in its guidelines. Instead, their tax preparers transcribe the official texts so that the average taxpayer can understand them.

Once you've completed all the factors that apply to your financial situation, an online tax preparation service does three things. It will review your return and show you any problems it finds that you can fix. This conveys the applicable data of any condition you must submit. Finally, it will guide you through the process of e-filing or printing your return. You usually pay at the end, so you can do everything until the last step without entering payment details.
After you create an account on the H&R Block site, you will be prompted to select which level of service you would like to use. You can help make this decision by listing financial circumstances that apply to you, such as dependents, rental properties and self-employment income. You will then see a long series of pages that provide personal information about you and your family. This information includes the names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers of everyone in your household that will be included when you return.
If you filed last year using H&R Block, that information will automatically transfer to this year's online return. You can also import data from major competitor websites like TurboTax and TaxAct.
Additional pages answer questions about your filing status, citizenship status, and residency. When you complete this section, you will receive a summary to review and edit if necessary.
Ways To File Taxes For Free With H&r Block
H&R Block uses a combination of wizards and topic lists to help you complete your return. Text instructions and graphical buttons and icons let you know how you progress through the many pages. The website guides you through Form 1040 as you would if you were manually preparing your return. First income, then deductions and credits, then taxes and other items.
Each topic section, such as Income and Deductions, has its own home page that lists all of its subtopics. For example, the Income home page lists interest and dividends, Social Security, and 1099-R retirement distributions. Whenever you finish answering all the questions for one of these subtopics, you will be returned to the topic's home page. This layout makes sense once you get the hang of it, but I found myself moving back and forth between pages a lot, which required extra clicking.
In the income section, you will need to provide information from your W-2s. There are four ways to do this. You can manually fill out fields, upload a PDF, take a photo with your smartphone after H&R Block sends you a text link to a secure location; Or, the site can directly import W-2 data if available based on your employer. H&R Block tries to minimize the amount of manual data entry you have to do, which is good because it reduces the chance of introducing errors.
After entering your W-2 information and answering several questions, you're ready to add more income. Once again, H&R Block allows you to import some of your data, saving you time and connecting directly to many financial institutions to ensure accuracy.

You answer questions or statements by providing the requested information, selecting the correct answer from a list of options, or entering information into fields. It is always clear. When you're done, H&R Block opens a page that replays your activity up to that point. It will display a list of each item
