A while ago, Taurus released a new gun in .40 S&W. The Model 405 uses moon clips to accommodate this semi-automatic round. This is Taurus' first work with this type of gun. The 405 is slightly smaller than the S&W K scope with a two inch barrel. It holds five rounds of .40 caliber.

The construction is made of stainless steel with a fully coated barrel. The version I received for review has the hammer, but I understand there is a non-hammer version in the works. The 405 comes with five moon clips and two security system keys. The grips are standard Ox Rib rubber grips. Scenes are simple scenes. The trigger is wide and smooth, so the gun feels good when fired.

The cylinder is firmly locked thanks to a standard rear lock and an additional lock in front of the cylinder. When the rear lock is activated, both locks are released. The cone compression cylinder is very close to what it should be.

The fit and finish is excellent. The single-action trigger pull is good, but the dual-action pull weighs 13.5 pounds. I think it will wear a little after good use. The Taurus also has a standard shift bar safety for releasing the hammer while cocking the gun by hand.

I have had problems with this gun. Not sure if it's the bullet brand and type combination, or the clearance between the rear of the cylinder, the frame, and the thin moon clip. I used both Federal 180 flat nose and Blazer 165 round nose bullets. I started with Federal 180 grain ammo and on average I locked the cylinder once every two cylinders. I had no problem using the 165-grain Blazer.

There can be several reasons for these failures. I noticed that the moon tabs are very thin and bend easily. The moon clips on the old S&W revolvers are thicker and very strong. Of course, most people need a tool to remove the brass from the clamp. This is not the case with the Taurus Moon clip. After the round was fired, the brass was easily removed. After several such failures, I loaded a blank brass from Confederate ammo and one clip loaded with Blazer ammo. I held the gun close enough to hear any contact between the brass and the back of the frame. When I turned the cylinder with the Federal brass there was a cracking sound, but no sound with the Blazer brass.

Another thing I noticed about the Confederate ammo was that it was hard to extract pale brass, while the Blazer did. Now I am inclined to believe that the problem was caused by a cartridge that did not meet this gun. Another idea that crossed my mind was the thin moon clips. These thin clips can be bent enough to fit 180 grain bullets.

The gun is an early model, but given the unscientific testing I did above, I hesitate to blame the gun. By no means would I say stay away from this gun, but I would advise new owners not to use the Federal 180 without thoroughly testing it.

The particular dimensions of the revolver currently make it difficult to find a holster for it. Some universal shells for medium revolvers will be suitable. I have several of these and it has worked well. I also tried the S&W K frame leather belt holster. Taurus is compatible but a little flimsy. If you have a thumb K frame, you are good to go. I'm sure several hood companies will have hoods for the 405 soon.

All my shots were doubles and singles from the ten yard line. As mentioned earlier, the double sight was very heavy, which adversely affected accuracy. Double action groups averaged three inches. Groups averaged less than two inches per action.

Recoil was stronger than the 29 oz. gun weight. In fact, it was a bit uncomfortable after about 50 rounds when firing a 180 grain load. Recoil is not a concern with some defensive loads where the bullet weight is low.

I have had problems with the Taurus, but I tend to go for the bullet rather than the gun. Overall, with the right defensive weapon, it can be a great choice for home or personal defense. The price is half the cost of S&W for those on a budget.

Using the moon clip is the fastest way to load and reload the gun. It's an old system with a preloaded velocity device, but it's still the best way to load a gun. I'd like to see the Taurus make the moon clip a little stronger, even if the shooter had to use a brass remover.

This Taurus moves very efficiently, so those who prefer guns may want to check out this model.

I resigned as Associate Editor effective December 14, 2017. My friend Pete M. email: [email protected] you can contact Pete for product reviews, etc. I thought I would like to review the Taurus 740 SLIM. Who wouldn't want to spend an afternoon shooting a small, lightweight handgun loaded with full capacity .40 S&W ammunition?

Overall, I like pistols. The SLIM felt good in my hands. It was small, but not so small that I couldn't hold it. The grip felt very comfortable and I thought it would make a good CCW gun.

The Taurus PT 740 is a round single barrel pistol chambered in .40 S&W. It holds six rounds in the magazine, and a total of seven rounds in the chamber. The gun weighs only 19 ounces unloaded. So even with seven rounds of .40 caliber, the weight is still very light.

The frame is made of polymer and the Taurus 40 cal SLIMslide is made of steel. Taurus calls it blue, but the frame is black and the slide is matte black.

The 740's visuals are excellent. They are small but useful. The rear sight is adjustable, which I know some people will like. I prefer defensive handgun based sights because they are more stable and less likely to be hit from the aim. The sights have a "three point" style. A fiber optic or tritium front sight would be appreciated, but not much is expected at this price.

Barrel length is 3.2 inches. This makes the gun easier to conceal, but it doesn't grow as fast as a "full size" 4-5 inch barrel.

The 740 SLIM has a manual safety on the left side of the gun. Depressing the lever until it is level with the platform puts the gun into firing mode. A red dot is visible on the slide and the gun is ready to fire. Pushing the safety lever up prevents the gun from firing. The security is easy to operate and I have not found it accidentally connected.

A bar runs through the center of the frame above the trigger and below the ejection port. By pressing down, the gun can be copied on the field. The process is very similar to the Glock pistol.

Also similar to Glock pistols is the main lever located in the center of the trigger as an additional safety against accidental firing.

The magazine version is the button style version. I had no problem ejecting an empty mag or inserting a loaded one into the Taurus SLIM 40.

There are several TaurusPT 740 SLIM accessories on the market. Here is their review.

Lasers are a great complement to small guns. There are several options for PT 740 owners.

Crimson Trace is a leading manufacturer of small arms lasers, and the company's LG-447 is a top choice for the Taurus 740 pistol. This unit is more expensive than the LaserLyte unit below, but worth it in my opinion- sa
